Our super collaborator & director Chris Gaffey shoots a brilliant campaign to unveil the relaunch of team GB Lions to Rugby league for Truc Fierce.
This week, after a 12 year absence, the Great Britain Rugby League Lions officially reformed.
The Great Britain Rugby League Lions were founded in 1908 to take on the best of the southern hemisphere. Over the decades many historic, epic contests took place between touring teams from Australia and New Zealand and the Lions were to be World Champions in 1954, 1960 and 1972. However, since 1995 the home nations have competed separately in the World Cup and following the 2007 New Zealand centenary tour to the UK the RFL announced the Great Britain team would no longer compete.
To relaunch the team, launch a new kit based on the iconic Great Britain chevron shirt and announce the impending New Zealand Tour this autumn, the sports creative team of Dave Birchall (Producer, Truc Fierce) and Chris Gaffey (Director) were appointed by the RFL to produce an integrated social media campaign to include teasers, films and photography.
To excite and inspire Rugby League fans, the evocative film introduces the 2019 Lions as an assembling force under dramatic stormy skies, proceeded by an evocative historical journey through of archive footage.
Chris offered this insight on the project. “To connect with its audience, it was important to both stir the emotions of the older fans who could remember the triumphs of a previous era and capture the imagination of the younger fan, for whom the Great Britain Rugby League Lions was a new contemporary team. Our approach aimed to create intrigue and generate a sense of power, pride and defiant aggressive magnificence! In short, we wanted to create something that would rouse the fans.”
The Great Britain players were shot in green screen studios in Manchester and Sydney. The campaign went live on Wednesday and response has been overwhelmingly positive from the notoriously frank Rugby League fans.#GBRLLIONS
